Eligibility For Membership

For the remainder of 2023 IPMO will accept applications for membership where the mediation programme completed was/is accredited by the International Mediators Institute (IMI) or the Mediators' Institute of Ireland.

Categories of Membership

The description & membership fees below apply for 2021 to 2023. IPMO Qualified NQs are mediators who are newly qualified or who have not yet completed enough cases to become Qualified Q members. Qualified Q members typically have completed 5-19 cases. Certified members have completed at least 20 cases. 

Membership fees become due and renewals are processed by the start of February each year.  Applicants that join after July 31st in their first year of membership will be charged half the full-year rate for that year only.

For those who support the aims of IPMO but do not currently practice mediation in Ireland, or who are training to be a mediator, or who practice mediation in another jurisdiction

 

NQ; newly qualified mediators who have completed accredited training and are starting professional practice

Q; mediators who have completed accredited training and have completed at least 5 cases or a supervision programme/co-mediation.

Mediators who have demonstrated a high level of mediation skills and knowledge and have completed at least 20 cases or at least 200 hours as a mediator within the last 5 years.

Understanding Membership Requirements

The requirements for each membership level is described below. 

IPMO Qualified Mediator NQ

Newly Qualified Mediators are members who have completed training and have not yet had any experience of practice.

Applicants who wish to be accredited as an IPMO Qualified Mediator NQ must be resident in Ireland and;

  1. Demonstrate recognition by the International Mediation Institute “IMI” as an “IMI Qualified Mediator”, which will qualify the applicant for automatic accreditation as an IPMO Qualified Mediator. OR
  2. Demonstrate that they have completed the appropriate foundational mediation training by a training provider approved by IPMO and pass the IPMO assessment, AND
  3. Provide evidence of appropriate professional indemnity insurance upon registration

Qualified Mediator NQ Members will be required to re-register on an annual basis and must;

  • Maintain a CPD log and demonstrate a minimum of 20 hours relevant CPD activity of their choosing each year – CPD may include role-play, reading, training, presentations/attendance at a Peer Support Groups or conferences/seminars, AND
  • From January 1st 2022 engage in a supervision programme accredited by IPMO, or work with an experienced approved co-mediator, until they acquire Qualified Mediator Q status
  • Qualified Mediator NQ Members may only offer their services as a sole mediator with the approval of their Supervisor, and subject to completing any sector specific mandatory training requirements.

IPMO Qualified Mediator Q

Qualified Mediators Q; is someone who has demonstrated real-world practice experience of at least 5 cases (sole or co-mediation)/50 hours, or has successfully completed an accredited supervision programme.

Applicants who wish to be accredited as an IPMO Qualified Mediator Q must be resident in Ireland and;

  1. Demonstrate recognition by the International Mediation Institute “IMI” as an “IMI Qualified Mediator” and must demonstrate real-world practice experience of at least 5 cases (sole or co-mediation)/50 hours, or has successfully completed an accredited supervision programme. OR
  2. Demonstrate that they have completed the appropriate foundational mediation training by a training provider approved by IPMO and pass the IPMO assessment, AND
  3. Provide evidence of appropriate professional indemnity insurance upon registration, AND
  4. Must demonstrate real-world practice experience of at least 5 cases (sole or co-mediation)/50 hours, or has successfully completed an accredited supervision programme.

Qualified Mediator Q Members will be required to re-register on an annual basis and must;

  • Maintain a CPD log and demonstrate a minimum of 20 hours relevant CPD activity of their choosing each year – CPD may include role-play, reading, training, presentations/attendance at Peer Support Groups or conferences, AND
  • Engage with a mentor whose role is to support the professional development of the mentee and will assist that member to reflect on their professional practice, AND
  • Complete any mandatory additional specialist training requirements.

IPMO Certified Mediator

Mediators who wish to be accredited as a Certified Mediator must be resident in Ireland and;

Be assessed and approved by the International Mediation Institute “IMI” as a Certified Mediator OR

  1. Demonstrate that they have completed the appropriate foundational mediation training by a training provider approved by IPMO, AND
  2. Provide evidence of professional indemnity insurance, AND
  3. Demonstrate a high level of mediation skills and knowledge and have completed at least 20 cases or at least 200 hours as a mediator within the last 5 years, AND
  4. Be assessed by the IPMO accreditation panel.

Certified Mediator Members will be required to re-register and pay the appropriate fee on an annual basis and to retain Certified status must;

  • Maintain a CPD log and demonstrate a minimum of 20 hours relevant CPD activity of their choosing each year – CPD may include role-play, reading, training, presentations/attendance at Peer Support Groups or conferences, and
  • Verify that they are willing to provide mentorship to at least one IPMO member in a given year, and may act as a Supervisor.
